The First Eric Sanderson Letters
I was unconscious. I'd stopped breathing.
I don't know how long it lasted, but the engines and drivers that keep the human machine functioning at a mechanical level must have trip-switched, responding to the stillness with a general systems panic. Autopilot failure - switch to emergency manual override.
This is how my life started, my second life.
There are two separate and distinct Eric Sandersons. The Second Eric Sanderson is the narrator of The Raw Shark Texts. He wakes up one morning to find he can't remember anything about himself or about his life.
The First Eric Sanderson remains an intimate part of the story. He is the author of all of the letters that the Second Eric Sanderson receives and is the main character in the Light Bulb Fragment. First Eric Sanderson was involved with Clio Aames and was present in Greece when she drowned. The Second Eric Sanderson has no recollection of any of these events. Along with many of the clues he leaves behind to help Second Eric Sanderson through his dissociative episode, First Eric Sanderson also has had previous relationships with many of the people in the novel. He is not unknown to them, but Second Eric Sanderson does not recognize anyone, instead, must forge new associations that may or may not cause problems in terms of recovering his memory.
