The First Eric Sanderson Letters
A LIST OF FILMS AND CHARACTERS MENTIONED IN THE RAW SHARK TEXTS
“Casablanca"
Mentioned in the one of the first meetings with Dr. Randle as an example of explaining Eric's fugue-like symptoms. In the dream at the beginning of Chapter 5 "White Cloud and Blue Mountain," Sanderson sees a statue of "a shadowy, spider-webbed Humphrey Bogart." The postcard Eric sends to Dr. Randle is a picture from the movie. Steven Hall lists Casablance as his "all-time No. 1 movie" on his myspace page.
“Jaws"
Clio has seen it twice. The climactic battle with the shark runs parallel to the end of the film. Some examples are Eric assuming the role of police chief Bordy, scout becoming Hooper and the Dr. playing the role of the captain Quint. Both Eric and Brody are left alone on the sinking ship to kill the shark, Scout goes in the cage and is believed dead, and Trey goes overboard and is presumably lost to the shark. Another point of intertextuality that Hall uses is the use of barrels (of phone books in his novel versus air in the film) to keep the shark close to the surface, both captains are amazed and troubled by the shark's ability to submerge despite having three barrels attached to it.
“Buzz Lightyear”
Tim Allen’s character in Toy Story, page 112
“Number One”
‘Make it so Number One,’ Eric says, which refers to Jonathan Frakes character Commander William T. Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation
“Dawn of the Dead"
Mentioned as Scout and Second Eric Sanderson pack up the jeep they leave at McDonald’s
"Dorothy, Tin Man and Toto"
Wizard of Oz carachters mentioned by Dr. Fidorous when Scout introduces Eric. (pg. 239, 241, 315, 396, 399)
also: "There's no place like home," Scout said absently. - pg. 403
