The Orpheus
Fidorous’s boat for hunting sharks that contains a very strong conceptual loop (Raw_Shark_Boat_Diagram.pdf). Conceived as a collective idea of what a shark hunting boat should and would be like therefore it is.
It is hinted that the Orpheus is partly based on the boat from Jaws ("A commonly held idea for more than twenty-five years")
Orpheus is a figure in Greek mythology, he is a poet, musician, and the inventor of the lyre. His story concerning the death of Eurydite is especially relevent. Eurydite was Orpheus' wife and was killed by snakes. Orpheus went to the underworld where he played such sad music to Hades and Persephone they agreed to let Eurydice return to earth with him. The catch was that he must walk in front of her and not look back until they both reached this world. Nearing earth, he forgot and turned to look at her, she vanished again but this time forever. The first English translation appeared in 1961. The story is one part speculative fiction, one part futuristic detective story and one part parable. Even more relevant to The Raw Shark Texts itself, is the sentence that follows the in-book quotation: "In his lifetime, he suffered from unreality, as do so many Englishmen; once dead, he is not even the ghost he was then."
The last line of this Borges quotation reads “In the illusory depth of the mirrors”.
Mirrors play an important role in The Raw Shark Texts: from Eric Sanderson first confronting himself as a reflection, to the notion of the two Eric Sand

The climactic battle with the shark runs parallel to the end of the film. Some examples are Eric assuming the role of police chief Bordy, scout becoming Hooper and the Dr. playing the role of the captain Quint. Both Eric and Brody are left alone on the sinking ship to kill the shark, Scout goes in the cage and is believed dead, and Trey goes overboard and is presumably lost to the shark. Another point of intertextuality that Hall uses is the use of barrels (of phone books in his novel versus air in the film) to keep the shark close to the surface, both captains are amazed and troubled by the shark's ability to submerge despite having three barrels attached to it.
“Buzz Lightyear”
Tim Allen’s character in Toy Story, page 112
“Number One”
‘Make it so Number One,’ Eric says, which refers to Jonathan Frak

Mycroft Ward

Neil edited Mycroft Ward

"Something fundamental in the relationship between time and Mycroft Ward changed."
Who He Is: Mycroft Ward
Ward." He He lived toward the end of the 19th century and became a hero during the Battle of Balaclava (October 25, 1854) during the Crimean War (fought between Imperial Russia and France, the U.K., the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Ottoman empire).
Surely a play on Microsoft Word?
It is also interesting to note the unusual nested reference the name is to the aforementioned hospital stay. The little known brother of Sherlock Holmes was named Mycroft, and a Ward refers to a hospital. As the only thing in the Hospital's library was books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and among those were the hated Sherlock Holmes books, it doesn't seem too unlikely a stretch that the evil villian related to brain cancer motifs was indeed a reference back to that original hospital visit. A bad memory eating it's way back to prominence.
